TUV NORD and Onward Security assist Advantech in obtaining the IEC 62443-4-1 certification
As 5G is being put into service in enterprise private networks, cities, factories and critical infrastructures, the requirements for cybersecurity are gradually increasing. Advantech, a global leader in embedded computing and IoT technology, obtained the IEC 62443-4-1 certificate in September 2020. The IEC 62443 standard is a series of cybersecurity standards for industrial automation control applications launched by The International Electrotechnical Commission (IECEE). It has comprehensive cybersecurity specifications, including policy, organization, process, system and component. By following the guidelines established by the IEC 62443 standard, companies can significantly reduce their chances of being attacked by Internet.
Onward Security is a leading brand in cybersecurity and provides security assessment solutions for connected devices. It has assisted Advantech to introduce a product security development system since 2018, and implemented the IEC 62443-4-1 (Secure product development lifecycle requirements) standard in 2020. The verification was performed by TUV NORD Taiwan, which assisted Advantech to obtain the IEC 62443-4-1 certificate. TUV NORD Taiwan is recognized by IECEE and is currently the only Certification Body and Testing Laboratory (CBTL) of the IEC 62443 in Asia. In addition to combining the localized services of TUV NORD Taiwan and the cybersecurity architecture implemented by Onward Security, Advantech attaches great importance to cybersecurity and invests in it, including cybersecurity protection, information product security development, etc. These are the main reasons why Advantech successfully obtained the IEC 62443-4-1 certificate, which also shortened the time to get the certification.
The world’s first IEC 62443 certificate on the IECEE official website was issued by TUV NORD in 2018. The number of vendors that passed the IEC 62443 standard was only a single digit in 2019, but the number of vendors that have obtained certification in 2020 has shown a multiple increase and many global leading companies have passed this certification. This means that countries pay more attention to cybersecurity in the OT field. Besides, industrial control products are different from general household products. Most of the application scenarios are engine room, factory and critical infrastructure. When these sites are shut down or attacked by hackers, the loss and impact will be unpredictable.
Ye ZhengZhi, Vice President of TUV NORD Group Greater China, said: "Cybersecurity has been valued by major international companies. In the future, these major companies will also require their supply chain to implement cybersecurity, so that the products they purchase can be secure from development to completion. The IEC 62443 will be one of the indispensable implementations and verifications in the global industrial control standards. TUV NORD Taiwan is committed to assisting customers in upgrading their industries and helping the industrial chain to progress and grow together, thereby enhancing the value of the industry and expanding the international market".
